RECOVERY To deal with the difficulties
Short presentation of the organization in relation to the thematic area covered by the project Kentro Pediou ke Efivou is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that was founded in March 1996 as an evolution of the Diagnostic and Consultative Center “Horizon” in Chios. It provides Community based mental health services. It is also specially certified as a voluntary non-governmental organization and as a provider of Social Care. Furthermore, the company is certified by the Ministry of Health as competent to undertake European projects. The objective of the company is the prevention and limitation of mental health problems by working at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. It provides Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation, Family Counseling, Treatment and Rehabilitation for Children, Adolescents, Adults and Families. It also provides In-service Training and Research. Kentro Pediou ke Efivou has three types of providing services. The first one is a Community based Mental Health Centre at Chios, which provides services such as speech therapy, therapeutic intervention for children with specific developmental disorders (scholastic skills, motor function and speech and language disorders), mental retardation and autism-spectrum disorders, a programme for social and emotional development, individual, group and couple psychotherapy, parents’ counseling. Furthermore, Kentro Pediou ke Efivou has developed a Mobile Mental Health Unit at Chios and a Day Care Centre for Adolescents with Autism at West Attica, both financed, under Community Support Framework Greece 2000-2006. They were developed under the programme “Psychargos” which emphasizes on community based mental health services aiming at social reintegration and vocational training, placement and support of people with mental health problems. This programme supports the Greek state’s policy for the psychiatric reform, through the de-institutionalization and creation of modern, community-oriented mental health services.The professions which staff the company are child and adolescent psychiatrist, psychiatrist, social worker, psychologist, psychologist -counselor in vocational guidance, special educator, early childhood educator, teacher of special physical education (P.E.), occupational therapist, speech and language therapist and nurse. One of the major goals of the company is Community Education and Sensitization. In order to promote mental health and eliminate the mental illness stigma it works in liaison with educational authorities, pediatricians and doctors of other specialties, judicial authorities and other local agencies. Furthermore, it provides information and advice on mental health and special education issues to the general public, as well as training and supervision for educational, social and health care professionals and services. More specifically, during the school years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011, the company has been implementing a programme on safe usage of Internet at secondary school students in collaboration with the Public Educational Services and the Local Medical Association. Furthermore, it is conducting a seminar for Mental Health professionals on "Introduction to Systemic Psychotherapy (6/2010-5/2011), and it is sensitizing primary school teachers in the prevention of bullying (2010-2011). It is publishing books and reading matter for parents and teachers as well as articles in the local newspapers. Furthermore, Kentro Pediou ke Efivou is planning an epidemiological research in order to figure out the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Greece. And lastly, a software has been created under the programme entitled "Creating software for restoring speech problems and learning difficulties in children inhabitants of remote areas” Measure 1.6 of O.P. "Employment and Vocational Training Project" Actions to promote employment for the unemployed with the active participation of NGOs.
